The Direct Action Monterey Network is working together with Old Capitol Books to offer a monthly poetry writing workshop as part of their DIY Skills Share Series. They will be the second Sunday of each month from 4-6pm. Next workshops will be:
Sunday 12 February
Sunday 12 March
Sunday 9 April
About the facilitators:
Ali Elfaki is a biology student at Monterey Peninsula College and writes poetry and music. He has been facilitating reading groups and poetry writing workshops with the Direct Action Monterey Network since 2014.
Heather Flescher is a longtime activist, writer and performer, co-founder of Hartnell Pride and the Curated Words spoken word series, and a staff member at the Paper Wing Theater.
About the Workshops:
This monthly workshop will be facilitated by local poets Jeffrey Erwin and Ali Elfaki, though may also have guest poets run master workshops.
This month’s workshop will have exercises to help you write new material, and there will also be given time where participants can get feedback and suggestions on their ongoing projects and work.
We hope that the writing that we work on or create during this workshop can then contribute to the on going open mic events and poetry readings hosted by the bookstore.
This is an informal monthly poetry workshop for people looking to improve both their writing and their performance of their work – either is optional. A rotating facilitator helps with prompts and giving everyone time at the table. For the first few meetings Ali Elfaki and Jeff Erwin are handling this but any attendee can volunteer to facilitate a following meeting. Feel free to praise, disagree, and reflect.
All are welcome at any level of ability, but bring patience, your ears, and a few poems. A starting exercise will provide you with an opportunity to write something new if you don’t have something on hand. We are trying to make this a safe and comfortable space. Let the other participants know if you are working with difficult subject matter.
