Psychedelics and Society (Thinking Critically about Society Summer 2014)

aldous-huxleyWednesday, July 30, 2014 at 6:30pm: For the last seminar of the Thinking Critically about Society Summer Session, we’ll be discussing psychedelics!

From religious experiences to government control of substances, this seminar will be an introduction to the ways that psychedelics have been used and how society limits use or proposes new use for psychedelics in the 21st century.

We suggest that you read a few of the articles below, which have been some of the most influential on the subject, but you can read as many or as few as you’d like. Electronic copies of all the articles below can be found for free below, or by visiting Old Capitol Books, 559 Tyler Street, Monterey.

1. Alan Watts “Psychedelics and Religious Experience” 1968. Text HERE.

2. Aldous Huxley “The Doors of Perception” 1954. Text HERE.

3. Ben Sessa “Can psychedelics have a role in psychiatry once again?” 2005. Text HERE.

This series of seminar sessions has been put together to encourage the exchange of ideas, experiences, and knowledge surrounding a particular topic or theme. We want to create a place where people can meet with other people from Monterey Bay communities to talk about current events and discuss new philosophies and ways of thinking critically about society. Though these seminars have been designed for non-students, and for those of us who have had little or no college experience, everyone is invited to participate. We believe that everyone can have something to offer to the seminars as we move through current debates in politics and different political and social theories.

Session 1: What is Gender? July 9th, 6:30pm
Session 2: Reading Marx. July 16th, 6:30pm
Session 3: Homelessness/Houselessness. July 23rd, 6:30pm
Session 4: Psychedelics and Society, July 30th, 6:30pm
