28 June, 2013, 6:30pm – Old Capitol Books invites you to NEPOTISM: A Night of Poetry. On June 28th, we’ll close up the shop, turn down the lights and bring together some of Monterey’s “best” local poets. Their work is amazing. They are my friends. I am not biased at all. Really.
Pretty New Sign for Old Capitol Books
If you’ve driven past the Monterey transit center and our lovely book shop in the past week, you might have caught a glimpse of our pretty new sign. Now our purpose has been proclaimed outwards onto the streets loud and clear: “There’s a book store here!”

Saturday, April 27, 2013 at 2:00pm – Local author Jason Warburg will be in the shop to sign copies of his book Believe in Me.

Sunday 21 April 2013, 6:30pm-8pm – The fourth session in the seminar series, Thinking Critically about Society. A night of feminist, queer, and gender theory presented in an open and inclusive way.

Saturday 4 May, 2013 – 6:30pm: Come join the poetry lovers at Old Capitol Books for a night of the poetry of Walt Whitman and Allen Ginsberg. Bring along your favorite poem in a celebration of the greats of gay and erotic poetry.

Old Capitol Books is honored to have recently purchased exceptional books from the personal library of a retired U.S. Ambassador John D. Jernegan (1911-1981) who retired to Carmel Valley in the late 1960’s with his wife Mary. Books on the subjects of diplomacy, cooking, Middle East history, and unusual Italian Touring Club books from the 1950’s, among others.
